Stay Hydrated

Stay Hydrated Before, During, and After Dance Class:

  • Drinking water is usually the best way to stay hydrated. Most experts recommend approximately 8 glasses of water a day (1 to 2 liters) depending upon your size, body weight, and physical activity. More activity = more fluids necessary.
  • Caffeine and surgery sodas are not the way to stay hydrated. Too much of either may have the opposite effect. I’m not saying never say never. Just be careful how much you drink. Especially, before or after class! This is something to be aware of and check with your health professional if you have concerns about the amount you consume on a daily basis.
  • In addition to replacing water, you also need to replace the electrolytes you are losing while you sweat. Gross but that’s the way our bodies regulate themselves when they get too warm. The simplest way to replace electrolytes is to eat food and or drink an electrolyte drink.

Foods With Electrolytes:  High potassium fruits include bananas, dates, raisins, coconut, and avocado.  Vegetables include spinach, beans, and potatoes.

Drinks With Electrolytes:  Gatorade, Powerade, and coconut water are good examples to help replace those electrolytes.
